Comp 121: State of the class. 2nd Quarter SP21

 

State of the class  - outline for podcast.  Full transcript here until 3/19/21 or by contacting me at my work email. 

  1. Grades close to up to date - but look at weighting.  Major point/ high stakes assignment due Sunday.  H&P=20%, TBL&PW=10%, FD = 60% Final "Exam" = 10%
  2. Theory of this class: application of assignments and learning goals
    1. Operant conditioning (grades yo)
    2. Zone of proximal development (ZPD)
      1.     Instructor
      2.     tutors
  3. Point of multiple drafts
    1. process rather than product
    2. revision = the name of the game
    3. never done, just due
    4. ZPD
  4.  Due dates, close dates and work-arounds (don't email assignments). 
  5. Andragogy - my goals
    1. get students to read prompt (engage with assignment) 
    2. get students to read rubric (how graded) 
      1. rubrics change from draft to draft
      2. not paint by numbers ("A Good Man is Hard to Find" reference). 
  6. It's not merely following directions.  Preparation for life.   
  7. CMV discussion.  WOW. You guys are deep thinker.  "red little wagon" example. True grammar is descriptive, not prescriptive or proscribtive. 
  8. new conditions for final draft personal narrative (NN, LN, ON) in new rubric
    1. grammar
    2. style
    3. source required
      1. best practice
        1. impress faculty
        2. add to word count
        3. cover your ass(ets) 
        4. points
      2. no in text quotes needed
      3. end text citation: bibliography/work cited/ works consulted.Use MLA Format
      4. examples
        1. was it news worthy? (ie Katrina? President was there? Major crime)
        2. relevant knowledge helps (seat belt statistics/ texting and driving stats/etc).
        3. was a text mentioned?
        4. interview someone there or someone you knew at the time.  Cite as interview. 
  9. Plans for 2nd quarter, and plans for 2nd half of the class.

BLM Demostration at KC Plaza 5.27.20 - first person account

I (as well as several others in my department) assign a natural narrative as one of the first assignments in my comp. classes.  It has to be true, It has to have started in the past and finished in the past, and it has to detail the event from the writer's perspective.  I recommend choosing events of a limited or discreet timeframe (a few hours, or days works much better than something that drags on for weeks or months).  Here is a handout taken from Labov , and here is the rubric as I use it in one of my classes.  It was used in training for Teaching Assistants at KU in the late 90's to early 2000's - which is where I codified my use of personal narratives. Podcast review: Code Switching "Why Now, White People?"

I started listening to NPR's " Code Switch " because code-switching has always fascinated me through my experiences living as a non-native speaker in an immersion environment or navigating multilingual environments here, at work or home.  Sometimes a code switch fills in a gap in one language where another has a succinct word or phrase for a universal experience.  Sometimes we switch codes to to avoid, or inflict, microaggressions.* I was disappointed to learn that the podcast didn't focus on linguistics and actual  code switching, but I appreciated the focus on race.  The BLM protests may have caused a shift, or intensification, and I'd like to examine the June 16, 2020 episode " Why Now, White People ?" First, some context.
